Whether you're 8 or 80 - come out and experience two of Kingston's best assets - great wind and water. Collins Bay Yacht Club Sailing School offers an ideal location for beginner sailors and those wanting to refresh their skills on the sheltered waters of Collins Bay in the city's west end.

We offer two week summer camps for youth age 8 to 17, as well as four week evening sessions for adults in June, July and August. Our Canadian Yachting Association certified instructors take each student through the basics of sailing including rigging a boat, points of sail, rules of the water and general sailing safety.

Students, both youth and adult, work at their own pace toward Canadian Yachting Association national "Learn to Sail" standards - White Sail I, II & III. Our more advanced sailors can pursue their sailing interests in our Bronze IV & V program which teaches them about tuning a boat, sailing in stronger winds, advanced sailing theory, as well as the use of spinnakers.

Our Fleet:
CBYC is committed to providing the highest standard of dinghy sail training and our policy as a not-for-profit organisation is to invest revenues into new equipment. We pride ourselves on the quality of our fleet.
  • New Hunter 140 in 2007
  • New in 2006 was the exciting Hunter 146.
  • In 2005, we retired our Laser 2's and purchased two new Club 420's for the Bronze program. The preferred dinghy for advanced levels
  • CBYC's sailing school fleet also includes six Hunter 140's purchased in 2002 and 2003 and 2004 and 2007. These boats are ideal for introducing both youth and adults to the fun and freedom of sailing.
  • We also purchased a new chase boat and motor for the instructors in 2005. This brings our on water coaching fleet to three boats.
For our youth program we have three or four students in a boat rotating through the various tasks involved with sailing a boat. Like most sailing schools, CBYC firmly believes students learn best from hands-on instruction. For our adult programme, two or three students is the norm for each boat.
