CBYC Sailing School-2008Learn to Cruise Courses |
The course covers an introduction of both theory and practice of sailing a keelboat. No prior knowledge of sailing or boating is required. The course leads to the Canadian Yachting Association Basic Cruising Standard (Day Skipper Sail), an internationally recognized qualification.
On successful completion you will know the terminology and be able to safely sail, motor, dock and anchor a keelboat in moderate conditions by day in waters that you know . This standard is in two parts, an afloat section where practical skills are developed and a theory portion that is tested in a one and a quarter hour written closed book exam at the end of the course. The afloat skills portion involves over 30 hours on the water acting as both skipper and crew and the balance of the course will involve teaching the necessary information to cover the ashore portion and test.
All the information in the written exam is covered in the book “Basic Cruising Skills” which is included the course fees and will be sent out to you before the course. A number of other pamphlets and cards will be included which give supporting information for the course. General information on the learn to Cruise standards can be found on the CYA site. On successful completion of the course the student will be provided with a CYA international Cruising log book and registered with the Ontario Sailing Association to receive a student number and seal for the logbook.(included in the fees)
The course also covers the Pleasure Craft Operators Card which is also included in the fees.
